Still Vote Yes On Prop 2

September 11, 2008

Lon Allan wrote about chickens and Prop 2:

“Proponents [of California's Prop 2] say it is cruel that laying hens are crammed into small wire cages with hardly room to spread their wings. They’ve been stuffed into small cages for more than a half century. [...]

We never thought about their happiness, only ours. [...]

“The hen’s only function, then and now, is to lay an egg a day. If she didn’t, she became a candidate for Sunday night dinner. [...]

“There’s the suggestion coming out of these hearings in Sacramento that laying hens should have at least enough room to spread their wings. Why? They don’t even use them to fly. I’ve thrown chickens farther than they’re capable of flying.”

Essentially, his argument is that chickens shouldn’t be treated more humanely because Lon Allan hates chickens and has abused them in the past.

Lon Allan lives in San Luis Obispo, Ca. That’s where I grew up and that’s where my parents live: SLO county. I’m embarrassed for my hometown.

This one made United Poultry Concerns’ newsletter:

Chicken Abuser’s Column Sparks Critical Response.

All Letters in Today’s San Luis Obispo Tribune Pan Lon Allan’s Perspective

Not a single letter in Allan’s defense. All letters including UPC president Karen Davis’s defend chickens against the savagery and stupidity of this writer. To read today’s Letters: http://www.sanluisobispo.com/182/story/467992.html.

Someone ought to (try to) file a police report - he basically admits to abusing chickens in his “opinion” “piece”.

But it’s us vegans who are rude and militant, right? ;)

Some of those letters are really good!

Got something to say?
