Probability, Animal Shelters, and Waldorf

Everyone wants to chime in on the Obama dog:
“It’s not likely that you’re going to find any purebred puppy younger than 4 months old in an animal shelter, and even those are few and far between,” (source)
I have a few responses to that:
- We’re talking about the PRESIDENT of the United States. If anyone can find a rescue purebred puppy, he can. But he won’t even have to look that hard.
- Reports are that they don’t want a purebred, they want a mixed breed.
- My sister’s dog is a Cocker Spaniel Poodle mix and was only a year old when my sister walked into the local pound and adopted her. I did the exact same thing with Floyd, our little Poodle. We just went to the pound, looked around, and picked one who would fit our living situation and lifestyle. I don’t advise getting a dog spontaneously, but if you’ve decided you’re ready for a dog, head down to the shelter. Don’t let anyone dissuade you from going to shelters.
- We just FOUND Bella wondering the streets. The vet estimates she’s younger than a year old. And she could easily be a purebred Australian Shepherd. It’s not at all difficult to find a wonderful, loving dog who needs a home and who fits your lifestyle in terms of size, coat type, and activity level. There is NO reason to go to a breeder.
- Already, the AKC has “found” purebred rescue puppies who need adoption. But being the AKC, the organization that keeps puppymills in business, the Obamas probably shouldn’t adopt those puppies.
- Plenty of dogs at shelters are exactly the same kinds of dogs you’d find at pet stores or breeders. They just need you more. Anyone who says they have to go to a breeder to find the dog they want hasn’t browsed petfinder.com, in fact, here is a list of currently available puppies in the DC area >>
- And below is a picture of Waldorf, a Shih Tzu/ Terrier mix puppy who needs a home:

Got something to say?

[...] Here, Obama buys into the myth that young and/or purebred dogs are not available for adoption; that they can only be purchased from breeders. A quick perusal through animal adoption sites such as Petfinder puts this misconception to bed, as Elaine points out. [...]
