On Gustav
September 1, 2008
Ed (my husband) wrote about Gustav in his StoxPoker blog. Here’s the beginning:
Well, I’m worried about Gustav. For those who don’t know, New Orleans is my hometown, and my parents had their houses flooded beyond recognition in Katrina (and have since moved away).
Unfortunately, three years later, for a variety of reasons, New Orleans has not recovered well at all. The neighborhood where my parents had their houses is still largely depressing with a distinctly bombed-out appearance.
New Orleans definitely doesn’t need another massive hurricane hit now.. but here it is.
I haven’t written about Gustav because I don’t really know what to say. I’m mostly just feeling like Ed: worried. I’m worried about what damage Gustav will leave his wake.
I’m worried about Ed’s dad and his wife who live near New Orleans in Baton Rouge. They didn’t evacuate. Instead they just secured the home and buckled down. They’ve lost power but nothing more than that so far. Let’s hope it stays that way.
Ed’s mom is fine. She’s in Arizona. In fact, Ed is visiting her right now. (She moved to Arizona after she sold her ruined home in New Orleans after Katrina.)
But I’m not just worried. I’m mad, too.
Right now, instead of volunteering, donating, praying, or just staying quiet, some people on certain unnamed websites are saying shitty things about New Orleans and New Orleanians. They need to stop.

Got something to say?

Elaine, Just catching up on all the posts ive missed the past two weeks, Hope Ed’s dad and his wife in Baton Rouge made out okay. Heard they were hit pretty hard.
I hope we have seen the worst of this hurricane season and hope we can reverse the damage done to our environment causing spikes of turbo weather once this administration is out!!
Yeah, they’re OK. Apparently a neighbor’s tree fell down, but no one was hurt.
They lost power for a while, but were able to buy a generator.
