My Sister’s Job

November 14, 2008

We knew the sky would fall but not how.

My sister was laid off yesterday. She’s one of thousands of people in the real estate business losing their jobs. But here’s the real scummy thing about it: they laid her off two weeks before her second anniversay, when she’d earn a two week vacation she was planning to use for Christmas. So now, not only has she lost her income and her health insurance (Cobra is too expensive), she won’t be able to do Christmas as planned. And of course, Thanksgiving will be spent worrying about where the money for her mortgage will come from rather than celebrating her good forture.

She is lucky, though, in some ways. She’s got us nearby to help out if need be. She’s got her health and her brain. She’s got friends and other relatives willing to help. And she’s got her sense of humor.

    Sorry to hear this.

While the financial crisis is more than half over, the follow-on economic crisis that hurts real people is not even 1/10 of the way through. It’s going to be rough road for most of us, and it’s just getting started.

I sound like the voice of doom, but sometimes the truth is doom, alas.

I am very impressed by Mary’s resilience at this time. She’s tough, always has been tough, and she’s doing what she needs to do to get through this. She’s going to come through even stronger. But my heart aches for her.

I think it is really shitty that she didn’t even have benefits from that day on, considering benefits are usually paid a month in advance. AND that because she moved into a higher position her longevity with the company didn’t count. That just stinks.

I agree that bailouts are not the way to go.

Got something to say?
